Is a bass a guitar?

In the violin family, the cello is the bass, hence "double bass" for the big guy, who's actually the bastard child of a violin/gamba family liason. Leo Fender came up with his electric model to be more portable and easier to play, and to allow guitarists to switch over more easily. Frets were included so the notes could be more precise, hence "Precision Bass". Back in the day, only the two were around, so one could say "double bass" or "electric bass". But now there are electric stick double basses, bass necks on acoustic guitar bodies, and so on.

Technically, I'd still go with "electric bass", but recently have started to say "bass guitar" more often, to differentiate from the electric double basses and whatnot out there. However, I think Leo had it right all along with the input on a Bassman amplifer- "BASS INSTRUMENT"
